Spanish scouts in Nigeria to search for talents
Four
Spanish scouts have arrived in Nigeria to search for young football
talents at the 10th Aspire Football Dreams Top 50, which holds from
September 21 to 24, 2016.The scouts will through 80 fields situated in the nooks and crannies of Nigeria for talents that may eventually become part of the Aspire Football Dreams programme, which will afford the chosen talents the opportunity to get scholarship for the next five years.
The scouts include, Xavier Gisbert, Oscar Palacios, Xavier Comas and Josep Maria Paris. They will work with sports managers of the Aspire Football Dreams, Nigeria.
Explaining the programme, Country Director, Col. Sam Ahmedu (rtd), said, “Since the commencement of the Aspire Football Dreams in Nigeria back in 2007, the country has benefitted a great deal in the identification of talents that have gone ahead to represent Nigeria. The various national teams have also benefitted through camping at the Aspire Sports Academy in Qatar.”
He noted that the academy provides a scholarship scheme where the players drawn from around the world are taught the rudiments of being professional football players, as well as give them opportunities to study different languages like French, English, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch and Arabic to guide them when signing contracts after graduation.

Diego Costa still relevant for Spain, Lopetegui declares

Costa has been struggling to find his best form while playing for the national team and had scored just once for Spain heading into the match in Leon.
The Chelsea striker netted twice to help his country to victory in Group G, though, and Lopetegui hailed his performance.
“In the end, the players are all master of their own destiny,” Lopetegui said at a news conference. “We try to help the players, but Diego is a great player and he showed as much today [Monday].
“Of course, attackers are judged on so much more than goals, but we are happy for Diego – and for Alvaro – that he scored two goals.”
Costa took aim at the Spanish press for their harsh attitude toward him after last week’s friendly win over Belgium, but he was in a significantly better mood on Monday after taking his Spain tally to three.
“Not just the coach, but my team-mates always support me as well,” Costa said.
“I can only thank my team-mates. They never let me down and always support me.
“Things are going well for me at the moment.
“Sometimes bad things happen and an attacker needs goals. I got involved more and I knew the goals would come.”

Neymar strikes as Brazil sink Colombia

Barcelona superstar Neymar swept home a 74th-minute strike at Manaus’s Arena Amazonia to settle a pulsating encounter between the two rivals.
It was a sweet victory for Neymar, who has unhappy memories from recent encounters with Colombia.
The 24-year-old suffered a tournament-ending injury against Colombia during Brazil’s ill-fated 2014 World Cup campaign. A year later Neymar was sent off in a stormy battle between the two sides at the 2015 Copa America in Chile, and subsequently banned for four matches.
Neymar’s second-half winner came after Brazil had taken the lead in the second minute through Inter Milan defender Miranda, heading home his first ever international goal on his 31st birthday.
But Colombia fought back and forced an equaliser when Marquinhos headed into his home net nine minutes before half-time.
The win saw Brazil move into second place in the overall standings, just ahead of Argentina on goal difference in South America’s marathon qualifying competition for the 2018 World Cup.
The five-time World Cup winners now have 15 points from eight games, one point behind leaders Uruguay who thrashed Paraguay in Montevideo earlier Tuesday.

Iheanacho’s strike gives Super Eagles ‘face-saving’ win over Tanzania
Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho (C) strikes a shot at the goal to earn his team the lone goal victory against Tanzania during the Africa Cup of Nations qualification match in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on September 3, 2016.

Super Eagles at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium, yesterday, defeated Tanzania 1-0 in the last Group B match of the African Nations Cup (AFCON) qualifier scheduled for next year in Gabon.
A lone goal by Kelechi Iheanacho through a volley in the 79th minute gave Nigeria the face-saving victory against their opponent.
Nigeria’s newly acquired coach, German Gernot Rohr, selected an attacking team with England-based quartet of Iheanacho, Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa and Victor Moses named in the starting list.
As expected Tanzania head coach, Boniface Mkwasa, listed KRC Genk forward, Mbwana Samatta, as captain of the team.
Two minutes after kickoff, Ighalo smashed Iheanacho’s pass over the top under a close challenge in the box.
Eagles continued to show that this was not going to be a dead rubber game as it was Moses’ turn to take a pop at goal. The Chelsea man’s free kick from 22 yards whizzed past the top right hand corner of Aishi Manula in goal for Tanzania.
Tanzania hardly had a sniff of the ball, talkless of a chance at Nigeria’s goal. And 10 minutes into the game, Musa provided a layoff for Moses after skipping past two markers but the Chelsea man could not apply the finish.
A cutback, two minutes later, from Nigeria captain, Mikel John Obi, picked out Musa in Tanzania’s penalty area but the Leicester winger kicked the air and had a second attempt at goal when he toe-poked straight at Manula to hold.
Midway into the first half, Manchester City youngster, Iheanacho, set up himself and struck with precision rather than power with his left foot but Manula produced a good save to keep his team in the game. Moses then came close to scoring twice but fluffed the chances.
On the stroke of half time, Elderson Echiejile bombed forward and combined with Moses, the latter flashed his effort over the top.
The restart produced the same scenario as Nigeria continued to press with Tanzania waiting for counter-attacks that never came or were broken down by the Super Eagles defence of Leon Balogun, William Troost-Ekong, Musa Mohammed and Echiejile.

States sports councils not helping our sports, says Toriola
Nigeria’s Segun Toriola eyes the ball in his men’s singles qualification round table tennis match at the Riocentro venue during the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro on August 7, 2016.

Seven-time Olympian, Segun Toriola, has indicted states sports ministries and councils, saying they are not doing enough to help sports development in the country.
Team Nigeria failed again at the just concluded Rio Olympics. The usual problem of poor funding raised its ugly head when money that ought to have been used for training of athletes was released barely few days to the commencement of the Games.
Speaking with The Guardian recently, Toriola said that people should not always blame the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC), because there is pressure of picking the best athletes to represent the country.
“The Nigeria Olympics Committee cannot take care of everybody,” he said. “The problem of sports in Nigeria is not the NOC, but the states sports councils. I remember when I was a young table tennis player in the 70s and 80s, my state sports council catered for everything that I needed. Starting from the bat to the canvass, which I used, were provided by my state sports ministry. It is not the same these days.
“I must give kudos to the Lagos State government for putting enough into sports development. It is only in Lagos in the last eight years that one can say has done a lot in terms of encouraging the youths in achieving their potentials. The President of Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Wahid Oshodi, has done a lot for sports, especially, in table tennis, and the state has not relented in that regards,” he said.
Toriola, who is the first African to compete in seven Olympic Games and was equally honoured by International Table Tennis Federation for his feat, said the last 2016 ITTF World Tour Premier Lotto Nigeria Open (Challenge) exposed many of these sports councils redundancy.
“Many of the athletes that competed at this year’s ITTF World Tour in the junior category went through hell. Majority of them said they were given money by their parents. Even some said they had to go borrowing. This never happened in my days and it does not speak well of the reason why the states sports councils were put in place. They were actually set up to nurture talents from the states after which the NOC or the Sport Commission will groom them to national stardom,” he said.

An uncommon Birthday celebration… I thank you all!
The European leagues go on a short break this weekend. So, I sheath my first football analysis and comments on this season until later.
This weekend also Nigeria’s Super Eagles will play their first international match under their new coach. There is only one thing at stake in the match, national pride. Only a good performance will loosen the noose around the neck of the NFF.
In the absence of these two issues, permit me to steer this page in a more personal direction.
Last Saturday afternoon, I had to prick myself over and over again that I was not dreaming. It was my birthday!
As usual, I did not mark it in any way. But to my greatest shock and pleasant surprise, no other birthday had been as elaborately and as massively marked for me as was done by hundreds (probably over a thousand) of friends on several social media platforms.
I do not know how it started or who started it but I saw the handwriting of my children as well as close friends in the unscripted conspiracy to celebrate me as lavishly as they did whilst I am still alive and kicking to experience this avalanche of encomiums, praises and goodwill messages that left me thoroughly humbled and grateful!
That day, and indeed for days after that, the messages kept coming with people’s kind words, a soothing balm to my troubled mind agitated by the shameful poor state of Nigerian sport with its dilapidated infrastructure, mediocre administration and a history littered with the plight of forgotten, neglected and disrespected former sports heroes languishing in poverty and poor health.
I am very blessed and privileged to receive these wonderful, unsolicited, unearned and totally unexpected effusions of encouraging and spiritually uplifting words, prayers and goodwill messages whilst I am still alive.
I thank my Creator for the opportunity to be able to respond and say Thank You to every one of them for their unrequited shower of love and friendship. Not everyone is that lucky or gifted by the universe.
All of this now challenge me and reinforce my commitment to continue to add my little bit to the effort of all others determined to make a difference in the world!
The story of Taofeek Abiodun Still on personal matters, I ask everyone to read this.
I stumbled on a young man some weeks ago whose story, I believe, would one day make a fairytale blockbuster movie.
He is 17 going on 18 years of age. He is from Oyo State, Nigeria.
Two years ago, he withdrew from the public secondary school he was attending because he was being bullied by fellow students who took his massive physique as an object of daily ridicule. Life was hell. He could not walk on the street where he lived with his parents without people harassing him with taunts. He was the butt of jokes and name-calling.
He became a psychological wreck and recluse locking himself up indoors for almost two years. Slowly and steadily he was wasting away as his esteem and self-confidence were been gradually sucked out of him.
He would always curse the day he was born different from all other children.
Abiodun’s ‘abnormality’ is that he is a big lad. He is probably the tallest 18-year-old, not only in the city of Ibadan but in Nigeria. He stands 7ft 2inches tall with a slight stoop that may be the result of his subconscious effort to make himself look shorter.
His feet are size 53.
The good news is that in the past three months, Abiodun has been introduced to basketball by a concerned neighbour who also got in touch with me and wanted me to intervene and to help the young man.
I jumped at the offer, grateful for the opportunity to be a part of the future of this young exceptional gift from God to sport. A boy with the physical attributes that Abiodun in any other clime, but Nigeria has an almost certain route to being a sport hero.
So, the plan is to prepare him well with proper guidanc

NPFL matches will go on, says LMC

Fixtures of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) will continue to hold as scheduled, according to a statement by the League Management Company (LMC) released yesterday.
The LMC said it was among several other grounds, relying on the motion filed for stay of execution of Mr. Justice I.I Kunda’s latest order made in disregard of the notice of appeal filed against his first order.
The League body also stated in addition to the stay of execution filed, it has also filed a notice of appeal against the order of the Plateau State High Court, Jos stopping matches of the NPFL until full compliance with the earlier interim order of the Court directing the reinstatement of Giwa FC to the League and rescheduling of matches for the club.
It also raised the question on how the Judge found an urgency in fact as required by law to make the first interim order ex-parte three months after Giwa FC was expelled from the League under the League Rules, for failing to play three consecutive matches.
Mr. Justice I.I. Kunda, the vacation judge of the Plateau State High Court, Jos division made the earlier order in a fundamental human right suit filed by an individual, a certain Mustapha Abubakar, who claims to be acting for himself and Giwa FC. Mustapha claims that the expulsion of Giwa FC had denied him the right to enjoy matches of the club after he bought season’s ticket.

I’m in Super Eagles to learn
Flying Eagles’ striker, Victor Osimhen
• Confident Tanzania Plots Eagles’ Fall In Uyo
Victor Osimhen insists he has firmly put behind him, the disappointment of Nigeria’s failure to qualify for the 2017 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations (Afcon) in Zambia.
The Flying Eagles were eliminated by Sudan after a dramatic 5-5 draw on aggregate in the third round of qualifying, with Nigeria losing out on the away goals rule.
Osimhen, who is currently with the Super Eagles squad preparing for today’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Tanzania, says he has now set his sights on success with the senior national team.
“I won the World Cup with the U-17s (in 2015) and finished as the highest goal scorer (with 10 goals), however, I lost out with the U-20s as we failed to qualify for the Afcon, Osimhen told Supersport.com.
“However, I have put that behind me and I cannot dwell on that anymore because this is a new chapter for me. I am here to learn, focus on helping the team and making the fans happy,” he said.
Osimhen has never played for Nigeria at senior level.
Meanwhile, the Tanzania’s Taifa Stars says they are in Nigeria to beat the Super Eagles in today’s 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match. They first landed in Abuja on Thursday aboard an Ethiopian Airline flight, and immediately flew to Uyo aboard a Dana Air jet.
The Taifa Stars are still searching for their first win over the Super Eagles after five previous clashes. The first encounter between the two teams was at the 2nd All-Africa Games that Nigeria hosted in 1973, with Nigeria edging the tie 2-1. In 1980, at the 12th Africa Cup of Nations finals also hosted by Nigeria, the Green Eagles lashed the Taifa Stars 3-1 in the tournament’s opening match.
In the qualifying race for the Spain ’82 FIFA World Cup finals, both teams drew 1-1 at the National Stadium in Lagos, before Nigeria won 2-0 in Dar es Salaam, thanks to goals by John Chidozie and Christian Nwokocha.
The Eagles walked over the Taifa Stars in a 1986 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture. In the first half of this fixture, in Dar es Salaam in September last year, both teams drew 0-0.

An injury-free Reus can be deadly, says Dortmund boss Tuchel
The Germany international has again had to miss matches through injuries this season, but opened the scoring in Tuesday’s 3-1 DFB-Pokal quarter-final win at Stuttgart – his 15th goal of the campaign.
Tuchel is eager to ensure the 26-year-old does not suffer another fitness setback and thinks he is developing his game to become an even bigger force for Dortmund.
“I said we want to convert him into a monster because he can be a monster on the field,” said Tuchel.
“Marco is a sensitive and creative player who needs to feel free, which means he shouldn’t have to worry about his body all the time. We are working on this.
“It is remarkable how focused he is, how clear and confident he is, how much punch and danger he can represent and how smartly he uses spaces.
“But it is important that we don’t expect too much too early. We absolutely want to get him through the season without further injuries.
“He is on a good path also mentally. The way he trains, how alert he is and how he presents himself within the team and how he gives everything.
“Like I said, he can be a monster, become a monster. He is doing everything for this. So I am very happy and absolutely convinced that he will reach this point.”
Reus’ next opportunity to frighten the opposition will come when Dortmund host Hannover in the Bundesliga on Saturday

Turan is not leaving Camp Nou anytime soon, by agent
Media reports suggested Chinese Super League outfit Beijing Guoan were prepared to offer Arda €20 million per season on a five-year deal.
The Turkey international only made his debut for Spanish and European champions Barca in January following a €34m move from fellow La Liga side Atletico Madrid in the off-season.
Bulut insists there has been no offer from China and Arda is not looking to leave the Camp Nou anytime soon.
“Arda is not looking at leaving now, or in the summer (transfer window).”
Chinese clubs have been on a spending spree in recent weeks, with the likes of Jackson Martinez, Ramires, Luiz Adriano and Alex Teixeira all making the move from Europe to Asia.

It’s easy to beat Chelsea under Mourinho, Motta declares
Mourinho was relieved of his duties in December just six months after guiding Chelsea to the Premier League title.
Chelsea had suffered the worst start to the season by a reigning champion, and Mourinho lasted just sixteen games into the campaign.
The 53-year-old was replaced by Guus Hiddink on an interim basis, and as PSG prepare to lock horns with Chelsea in the Champions League last 16 next week, Motta told RMC: “It’s more difficult without Mourinho.
“They’ve changed their game. When we played them in the last two seasons, they were a team who played on the counter and didn’t want the ball.
“Nowadays, they’re a team that tries to play. It will be difficult.”
