ootball Lukaku wants Man Utd fans to drop offensive chant

Romelu Lukaku has asked Manchester United fans to “move on” from their controversial chant about the Belgium striker.
Lukaku has quickly become a favourite of United supporters since his close-season move from Everton, but their vocal praise of the star has angered anti-racism groups.
One United chant, to the tune of the Stone Roses’ Made of Stone, prompted anti-discrimination organisation Kick It Out to protest as it used a stereotype about black men by referencing the size of Lukaku’s penis.
The 24-year-old, who has scored seven times for United this season, is pleased to be appreciated by the Old Trafford fans, but he wants the song to stop.
“Great backing since I joined #MUFC,” he was quoted as saying on United’s official Twitter account.
“Fans have meant well with their songs but let’s move on together. #RespectEachOther”
United contacted relevant bodies to see whether the song could be categorised as racism by the letter of the law, while saying in a statement they have a “zero tolerance towards all forms of discrimination”.
The club posted on social media ahead of Wednesday’s League Cup win over Burton Albion — in which Lukaku was an unused substitute — that “action will be taken against any offensive behaviour”, reminding supporters of the club’s commitment to racial harmony.

Real Madrid beaten by Betis on Ronaldo return

Antonio Sanabria struck deep into stoppage time to hand Real Betis a shock 1-0 win away to Real Madrid on Wednesday as the European champions failed to score for the first time in 74 matches.
Defeat leaves Real already seven points adrift of leaders Barcelona just five games into their defence of La Liga having failed to win in all three home games so far this season.
Even the presence of Cristiano Ronaldo on his return from a five-match domestic ban couldn’t break Betis’ resistence as former Real goalkeeper Antonio Adan produced stunning saves from Isco, Toni Kroos and Gareth Bale.
And Betis snatched all three points in the 93rd minute when Sanabria powered home a header from Antonio Barragan’s cross.
Ronaldo was recalled among three changes to the Madrid side from Sunday’s 3-1 win at Real Sociedad as Zinedine Zidane named his strongest available side.
However, it was the visitors who made the stronger start and should have gone in front when Sanabria’s goalbound effort was cleared off the line by Dani Carvajal.
Real grew slowly into the game as Luka Modric fired into the side-netting, whilst Ronaldo’s low drive was well-handled by Adan.
But it was Keylor Navas who was forced into the best save of the opening 45 minutes as he tipped Fabian Ruiz’s rising driver over the bar
Adan made another smart stop to deny Isco just before half-time and Betis had to resist an onslaught after the break.
Ronaldo blazed wildly over from Bale’s inch-perfect cross before Kroos forced Adan into another finger-tip stop.
The former Madrid ‘keeper’s finest moment came in denying Bale in spectacular fashion 15 minutes from time, though, as the Welshman’s backheeled volley was turned onto the post.
Betis were the side to finally have the ball in the net as the game entered five minutes of stoppage time, but Sanabria had strayed offside as he turned home Andres Guardado’s shot.
However, they broke with purpose once more minutes later and this time Sarabia wasn’t to be denied as he bulleted a header into the far corner.
Atletico celebrate
Earlier, Atletico Madrid celebrated being awarded the honour of hosting the Champions League final in 2019 with an impressive 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao to move up to third.
The visitors needed to rely on a brilliant penalty save from Jan Oblak to deny Aritz Aduriz just before half-time.
Angel Correa opened the scoring 10 minutes into the second-half by finishing off a flowing move involving Antoine Griezmann and Saul Niguez.
And Yannick Carrasco secured the three points with an angled finish from another Griezmann through ball 17 minutes from time before Raul Garcia netted a late consolation for the hosts.
UEFA awarded their showpiece event for next season to Atletico’s new Wanda Metropolitano earlier in the day.
And the feel-good factor around Atletico following their 1-0 victory over Malaga to open their new 68,000 capacity home at the weekend continued with a commanding display in their fifth away trip in six games so far this season.
“It is another important step for the club. Hopefully on the field we can match the growth of the club,” said Atletico coach Diego Simeone.
“We are making an enormous effort. We have played five games away from home and the response has been positive.”Sevilla moved into second, two points behind Barca, as Jesus Navas scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Las Palmas.
Alaves remain without a point or even a goal after five games as Luisinho’s winner handed Deportivo la Coruna 1-0 win for their first victory of the season.Leganes stay in the top half after a 0-0 draw at home to Girona

Nigeria’s’ quest to qualify for the final game of the on-going WAFU Cup will meet a familiar foe when they confront Benin Republic in one of the semifinals of the championship.
The Eagles defeated home team, Ghana 2-0 to berth into the last four, where they will meet with the Squirrels barely two months after beating the same foes 2-1 on aggregate to qualify for next year’s African Nations Championship (CHAN). The Beninoise defeated Niger Republic 2-1 to win Group B and a place in today’s semifinals.
The Super Eagles are the only remaining team in this championship that has not conceded any goal in their three matches. Speaking on today’s game, one of the stars of the Eagles’ victory over Ghana, Anthony Okpotu said Monday’s win has boosted their confidence ahead of the semifinals, adding that football fans will see the real Nigerian team in the game against Benin Republic.
“We never doubted our ability to face the rest of West Africa here, but we were getting anxious when we could not win early in the competition,” Akpotu told a Ghanaian website. “Now, that we have overcome that problem, we will now march on to the trophy.”
The Lobi Stars’ forward has been tipped by many for great things in this competition, but he is not carried away by the accolades he has received so far. “Football is a team game and we cannot win without the efforts of every member of the team. I want to say that the determination shown by every player in the team has convinced me that we will beat Benin Republic again.
“It is a great feeling scoring in the national team jersey. I am happy to have finally opened my goals account for my country,” he said.To Ubong Friday, who is one of the midfielders piloting the Eagles from the midfield, having come thus far the players now know that the trophy is within reach.
“I wish to state here that we have not come to Ghana to just to take part in the championship, but to do our assignment properly and bring the trophy back to Nigeria… this has been our target since the start of the competition,” he told SCORENigeria after the victory over Ghana.
Winning the game at the Cape Coast Stadium will give the Eagles the opportunity to vie for the $100,000 prize money, which the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has promised to leave for the team to share.

Spain coach Julen Lopetegui has taken the time to praise Diego Costa in the wake of Monday’s 8-0 World Cup qualification win over Liechtenstein.
Costa has been struggling to find his best form while playing for the national team and had scored just once for Spain heading into the match in Leon.
The Chelsea striker netted twice to help his country to victory in Group G, though, and Lopetegui hailed his performance.

“In the end, the players are all master of their own destiny,” Lopetegui said at a news conference. “We try to help the players, but Diego is a great player and he showed as much today [Monday].
“Of course, attackers are judged on so much more than goals, but we are happy for Diego – and for Alvaro – that he scored two goals.”
Costa took aim at the Spanish press for their harsh attitude toward him after last week’s friendly win over Belgium, but he was in a significantly better mood on Monday after taking his Spain tally to three.
“Not just the coach, but my team-mates always support me as well,” Costa said.
“I can only thank my team-mates. They never let me down and always support me.
“Things are going well for me at the moment.
“Sometimes bad things happen and an attacker needs goals. I got involved more and I knew the goals would come.”
