Samsung to suspend Galaxy Note 7 sales after battery explosions

Samsung said Friday it would suspend sales of its latest flagship smartphone Galaxy Note 7 as reports of exploding batteries threatened to damage the reputation of the South Korean electronics giant. Samsung -- the world's top maker of smartphones and ordinary mobile phones -- will also offer new devices for those
who have already bought the large-screen smartphone, its mobile chief said. "We have received several reports of battery explosion on the Note 7 that was officially launched on August 19...and it has been confirmed that it was a battery cell problem," Koh Dong-Jin told reporters. Samsung has so far sold one million units of the Note 7 in countries including South Korea and the US. So far 24 of them have been confirmed to have faulty batteries, Koh said, adding he was "deeply sorry" over the incident. Since late last month, several users have posted photos and videos on social media showing the charred Note 7 with part of its 5.7-inch touchscreen burnt and melted, saying it suddenly caught fire. Growing safety concerns over the Note 7 have forced Samsung to suspend its shipments at home and delay its planned release this month in several European countries including France

Nigeria’s active telecoms subscribers down by 1m – NCC

The active customers in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry reduced by 1,105,928 in the month of December 2015, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has said.

The commission made this known in its Monthly Subscriber Data, which was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos.

NAN reports that active lines in Nigeria stood at 151,017,244 for the month of December, against the figure of 152,123,172 in November.

According to the data, 148,681,362 of the 151,017,244 active numbers subscribe to the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) network services.

The GSM operators’ active customers reduced by 1,105,758 as against the 149,787,120 subscribers they recorded in the month of November.

The Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) operators had 2,148,727 active users in December, indicating a decrease of 393 from the 2,149,120 customers they had in November.

Also, the monthly subscriber data showed that the Fixed Wired/Wireless networks’ consumers increased to 187,155 in December, as they added 383 customers to their record of 186,772 in November.

The chart revealed that the teledensity of the country’s telecommunications industry decreased to 107.87 per cent in December, from 108.66 per cent in the month of November.

NAN reports that the teledensity statistics measure the percentage of a country’s population with access to telecommunications services, as determined from the subscriber base.

Nigeria’s teledensity is currently calculated by the NCC on a population of 140 million people.
NAN also reports that there is a decrease of 0.79 per cent in the teledensity of Nigeria in December.

‘Not all China made phones are bad’

HsiehChinese original equipment manufacturer (OEM) Konka telecoms recently launched some of its mobile phone series into the Nigerian market in a bid to deepen competition in the mobile phone market.

In this interview with ADEYEMI ADEPETUN, Konka Sales Manager for Africa, Evangelous Hsieh, denies claims that China made phones are bad. He also spoke about the firm’s plans for Nigeria. Why did it take this long for Konka to come into the Nigerian mobile phone market compared to other manufacturers?China is very far from Nigeria and it took us a while because our strategy in konka before was to be a domestic market player but because now we have saturated that market very well and our company share has grown enormously, we are now expanding by going oversees to move our business forward and bring good products to Nigeria.

Apart from the population in Nigeria, what other attractions drove konka’s decision to come into the country? We have gotten so much love and acceptancefrom Nigerian people. People are really buying our products because they appreciate new quality products.

Also, Nigeria is one of, if not the richest country in Africa so there is the ability to buy devices. Nigerians are open to new technology if it is well marketed and of good quality.

Another reason is that Nigeria is a great channel to penetrate into the whole of West Africa, once a phone is doing well here; itis likely to do well in other West African countries.

Does Konka have any specific strategies different from those explored by other OEMs that have come into Nigeria?OEMs manufacture other brands; they do not have to sell their brand so they don’t need to care about brand image or reputation. All they do is manufacture and sell.

But for us, it’s different because we are manufacturing and selling our own brand and if we produce poor quality, we would be hurting our brand and ourselves. Manufacturing your own brand means that you will be more serious with it and committed to it and thinking about doing the best for yourself and your brand.

There is a common belief that Chinese manufacturers produce substandard phones for sale in African countries. What would you say about this?I don’t know about that notion or belief but I will tell you why Konka will not do this.

We are doing the same in the Chinese market, it is totally meaningless to go and look for another cheaper supplier to pay less to supply goods for use in only one region.

We do not do that; the phones sold in Nigeria are the exact same ones being sold in China. It would be easier forquality control as well. Not all China-made phones are bad.

Looking at the largeness of this market, are you note considering establishing a manufacturing plant here? The first plans we made and followed through was to first come down here to get to know the Nigerian people, cultures, manner and the way business is run in the country. We started selling phones from China to test the waters.

We don’t want to do something that would notlast and just crumble in a short time, we would like to take our time to think things through properly and get it right.

To build are manufacturing plant and factory, you have to figure out how many people are going to work there, where is the capacity for this factory, how much demand does the product have and all that.

You can’t just build afactory here because you sold 1 thousand phones and then there is no high demand for your product so we can know how big the plant should be.

In percentage, how much market share are you expecting to get within one year of coming into the Nigerian mobile market? We are really not interested in huge numbers; all we want to see is that there is a steady gradual growth. So if in one year we have five per cent and the next year we get seven per cent and keep growing, that is good enough for us.

Have you tried to find out about the grey market activities in Nigeria? What are your strategies to combat people faking your products?Working with Mansales as our major distributor in this country, we have a very strict policy on protecting our brand. We have sales people that look out for imitated phones.

If wehave any problem about people faking our products and spoiling our reputation we will definitely do something about it. We will reportto the authorities, the media and tell people how to distinguish features and specifications. How will your brand cope with the likes of Samsung, Tecno, Infinix, Huawei, which are dominant player in the market already? We are all in the same circle in china so we know who they are and what they are doing. So we know what they are bringing from Chinato Nigeria.

We are in the same industry so it is like you are playing with your classmates. Konka is larger than most of these other Chinese companies so we produce better quality and more advanced technology.

Mozilla to kill Firefox smartphone operating system

The Firefox smartphone operating system is being shut down, three years after a launch aimed at challenging the dominant platforms powered by Apple and Google, developers saidThursday. The operating system created by the Mozilla developer community as an open-source system failed to gain traction in mobile devices, according to a statement from Mozilla developer George Roter.“Through the work of hundreds of contributorswe made an awesome push and created an impressive platform in Firefox OS,” he said in ablog post.“However, as we announced in December, the circumstances of multiple established operating systems and app ecosystems meant that we were playing catch-up, and the conditions were not there for Mozilla to win oncommercial smartphones.”Roter said Mozilla has set “our plan to end-of-life support for smartphones after the Firefox OS 2.6 release” which means that “Firefox OS for smartphones will no longer have staff involvement beyond May.”In 2013, Mozilla announced a tie-up with Spanish-based GeeksPhone to introduce two low-cost devices powered by Firefox.Firefox devices made by China’s ZTE and TCL were announced in 2014 at a cost as low as$25.Roter said Mozilla made the decision as part of a push “to pivot from ‘Firefox OS’ to ‘connected devices'” and would be focusing on developing open-source software for the Internet of Things — a category which includeseverything from connected cars to lightbulbs.“As of today, we have three projects that have passed the first gate including (a) smart TV and about a dozen more projects are prepping for review,” he said.
